Merry Christmas Eve! Although I also celebrate Yule, I combine Christmas as part of my Yule celebration (Christmas has major pagan roots, anyway!). We do not include any religious aspect to our celebrations (we are atheists), but still find joy creating holiday memories with our kids. My son is 5.5 and my daughter is 3. They are at a great age to really get the traditions rolling!
Put up Christmas Tree
We usually do this the first weekend in December. We order pizza and blast the Christmas music. If we plan it right, we watch a Christmas movie to mark the beginning of the holiday season. Fun Fact: We use the same fake christmas tree that I had as a child!
Drive around town and watch Christmas lights
Our city has a few neighborhoods that go all out with Christmas lights. We also drive a few towns over to view large park displays
Visit Santa
This is one that most people who celebrate Christmas take their kids to do. We have a special Santa that we have been taking my kids to since my son was a baby. It is a very authentic looking Santa and even has Mrs. Clause with him. I love having the same Santa in our picture every year. Unfortunately, this year our city changed things up (without telling us) and not only moved the location of Santa, but did not have pictures available. They even told us the kids could not sit on his lap and had to walk past him and say hi. I was pretty upset about not getting our picture. But I cherish the pictures over the last 6 years. My kids did end up seeing a total of FIVE Santas this year. Here is one.
Matching Jammies
Yes, we are that family. I choose to do this because it is something that I always wanted to do with my family as a kid but we never did. Fortunately, my husband obliges my Christmas spirit and wears whatever I hand him. Here is the set from last year!
New Ornaments
I am a sucker for ornaments. I do not have a designer tree. We our proud owners of the mod podge Christmas tree that is a combination of handmade ornamants and the personalized ones I’ve bought for my family over the years. Each of my kids get an ornament and then we get a family ornament for the year. This is the first year my son asked for his ornament. It shows that the tradition is becoming a fixture in his memories ❤️
Bake Cookies
My husband started this one as he does the baking. He makes cookies from scratch with the kids and they are so delicious!
Elf on the Shelf
Yep. I am one of those moms. But I am very low key about it. I don’t get super creative. I am lucky to remember to move the damn thing let alone stage a big scene for the kids to wake up to. No daily humble brag elf pictures from me. The kids do enjoy it though!
Christmas with Family
We have at least 3 parties we attend during the holiday season. If we are lucky, they aren’t all on the same day. I love doing this but I do hope to create a new tradition in the years ahead where my kids, husband, and myself, stay in our matching jammies all day Christmas and don’t leave the house.
Do you have Christmas traditions you keep with your family? What are some of your favorite Christmas memories? Let me know in the comments!
