Smut Rating System

If you love good sex scenes in books but aren’t a fan of the cliche romance novels, you may appreciate this rating system.

So lets get the term “smut” defined in my own terms. Smut is not a bad or dirty word from my point a view. The word is often used to describe a book that has a lot of sex scenes and is generally categorized into the “romance” category. Those cheap paper backs you see at the grocery store have likely been called smut by someone.

For me, when I say “I like a little smut in my books,” I mean that I like a good dose of sex scenes. But let me be clear: I am not a romance reader. My tastes do not align with the plot and overall theme of romance novels. Every now and then, I will pick up a romance novel to indulge in but it is not a genre I typically enjoy.

Therefor, I have a pretty strict rating system when it comes to my “smut scale.” This is a two part rating system. First, I rate the sex scenes. Were there a lot of them? Were they well written? Second, the book must have a good plot that is not just about the romance. This is very important to me because I get bored if I am just reading about a love story and that is it. There has to be a bigger plot with a bit of romance thrown in. It is all about the perfect balance.

In other words, I am picky with how sex is used in books.  Because of that, I don’t plan on subjecting romance novels to this two part review system because I don’t think its fair considering the entire point of romance novels is the relationship aspect. There are exceptions to this which are usually paranormal romances.

The System

The book will receive a flame rating of 0-5.  Zero being not sexy at all or badly done and 5 being super smutty with amazing writing style.

The second part of the system is a star review. This revolves around the plot and how good the story was. My basic star review system is used for this second part. 0-5 stars.

12345

For example, if a book has really great sex scenes but the plot was “meh,” it may receive 3 stars and 5 flames.

Upcoming books I plan to do a smut rating for:

ACOTAR Series

The Kiss Quotient

The Hating Game

The Arcana Chronicles

Nevernight

The Sookie Stackhouse Novels
