I don’t have a star review for this book because I DNFed it. But I can say with confidence that this would have been a 3 star read.
I REALLY had high hopes for this book because the cover is just so enchanting and beauitful. I thought the story would be enchanting too. Unfortunately, it was too dull to finish. Once I found myself not feeling excited about picking up a book to read, thats when I decided to just stop.
There is A LOT of back story that is happening but the reader doesn’t really know about. It is just hinted at (Kingdoms, wars, secrets, etc.). It is obvious the reader isn’t really going to find anything out in this book.
Our main character is Tea and I don’t feel connected to her at all. We see the mundane of her training experience and it was just boring.
The language used is confusing. I am assuming that the author is using made up terms for things for the world she’s created. There is no pronunciation guide which made me stumble a lot. Plus, the definition of the “created words” doesn’t really give a clear explanation of what the things are. Sometimes she is OVERLY descriptive that my brain gives up trying to picture it (like the special uniform the witches wear).
I also just don’t quite understand the Universe in general and why these witches are trained to be “entertainers” or “warriors.” nothing is really explained. The magic system just exists.
The alternating view points made the anticipation of the ending less exciting because we know Tea ends up exiled, so the mystery is supposed to be WHY and HOW, but apparently, we don’t get to learn that in the first book at all.
The little bit of romance was too far and thin between the “story” that not even that piqued my curiosity.
Basically, I was just BORED and slightly confused.
BUT I will consider picking up the second book because I heard you get a lot more story and less description
